There are times when we cannot avoid those sudden feeling of sorrow and solitary loneliness. It is perfectly normal to feel this way from time to time. Certain events such as death, failure, and other issues can expectedly bring us down. When these events and feelings take over our lives for an unusually long period, we need to assess our abilities actually to partake in just a normal life. In these cases, scrutiny of our state should already be conducted because we may be experiencing a major depressive disorder.
1. Feeling excessively down
Unusual occurrence of feeling down and blank, as well as excessive crying, are signs of depression. Getting easily irritated can also be a sign, especially for kids and teens.
2. Reduced Delight and Satisfaction
People lose interest in most events, and they don’t find any enjoyment in anything that they do or participate in.
3. Change in Weight
Sudden and irregular spurt/ loss of weight can be a sign of depression. Children in growing years who do not meet their usual required weights at certain ages can also be in danger.
4. Abnormal sleeping patterns
Lack of rest or too much of it can also be a sign.
5. Shakeup or Slow Down of Motor Skills
Restlessness or excessively slow movements should not be considered as anything.
Unfathomable exhaustion is also a symptom.
7. Feeling Guilty and Having no worth
Even without serious reasons, a depressed person can feel guilty and useless.
8. Foggy Mindset
When a person’s mindset seems to be foggy, he/she can’t think clearly and put together decisions properly.
Depression symptoms can come from even an isolated traumatic occasion. It can also come from the overlapping life predicaments. However, some people can also turn out depressed without encountering any problematic issues.
A person can also suffer from a major depression once in his/her life and not experience it again while some can go through it from time to time.
It is a normal part of life to go through the emotions of sadness, loneliness, and depression. However, if you feel like these feelings have taken over your normal routine, then you must force yourself not to let these symptoms go unnoticed. If you think you have depression symptoms, the right move is to ask for medical attention.
Ignoring and doing nothing to these symptoms can only worsen your potential illness. In that case, the illness can stay with you for many years. Aside from its extended effect on you, your life can also be a mess and may lead you to take matters into your hands—suicide. Although it is not easy to recognize and admit that you have depression symptoms, getting help is already a big step towards your betterment.
The National Institute of Mental Health also presents the following as some of the symptoms of depression that need to be taken note of:
• Lack of concentration
• Forgetting important points and having a hard time coming up with decisions
• Exhaustion and irregular loss of energy
• Useless feeling of unworthiness and guilt
• Being bombarded with negative thoughts
• Abnormal sleeping patterns
• Easily irritated and agitated
• Losing enthusiasm in individual events, and activities like sex.
• Excessive eating or loss of interest in food
• Body pains which do not go away even after drinking medicine,
• Feeling lonely and dark for long periods of time
• Thinking about ending your life
