The most effective treatments for gout are still those which have withstood the test of time. In times past, people have been known to use traditional means to find relief from the pains inherent in gouty arthritis. These methods were not sophisticated. They were simple, making use of basic everyday supplies you are likely to find in any home.
With the advancements made in technology and medical science, however, these methods were pushed aside for newer and more modern treatments. The “old” methods were considered old-fashioned, out of date, and not in keeping with new discoveries in medicine.
You cannot, however, argue with what works. It does not matter if these methods seem to rely “only” on good old-fashioned common sense, and not, at least as far as ultra-modernists are wont to think, in scientific research. If it works, it works; and you cannot put these down for whatever reason you might want to put forth.
Today, these methods have been vindicated. They are now gaining renewed interest and attention from people are suffering from gout.
In the majority of homes, mothers tend to treat pain the old-fashioned way – by using hot or cold stuff on the affected area. This is also an effective way of relieving gout symptoms. It serves to reduce the swelling and lessen the pain. Apply a cold compress, (this may take the form of an ice-pack) on the swollen joints. Do not press the ice on the affected area for an extended time. This will cause the skin and flesh to bruise. It is better to apply the ice pack infrequent but short intervals. The coldness may initially feel uncomfortable. It will, however, bring a soothing relief later on.

In spite of the pain, you will need to exercise the affected area. You can point and flex the area or contract and release. These movements will keep the areas properly “oiled” and mobile.

There are many fruits which help you control your uric acid levels, the culprit in gout attacks. Strawberries diffuse the effect of these acids. Cherries, on the other hand, bring down the levels so that they do not reach the level where monosodium urate crystals form.2016-08-06
