What exactly is referred to as the upper back? This region is the one located on your back, directly behind the chest and the upper abdomen. Included in this region are the shoulders, as well as the ribs connecting to the thoracic spine. Others identify this area as the middle back or the thoracic spine.

If you do not have the proper posture, it is bound to show as back pain sooner or later. If you use the back muscles constantly, without giving it the appropriate time to rest and recover from all the back-breaking and weight-bearing work it has to do, it is likely to complain by way of pain. Any traumatic accident may result in back pain. Arthritis can also be depicted as pain in the back. Bone cancer may also be manifested in the same manner.
If the pain is accompanied by other severe and worrying symptoms like chest pain or great trouble in breathing, it is possible that you may be having a heart attack. Many people tend to summarily disregard the pain as unimportant. They simply take pain killers, hoping that the pain will go away on its own. This should not be the case as the problem may be more complicated than a simple back pain. Make sure that you immediately consult a doctor for proper medical assessment. This is especially important if you have had the pain for quite some time now, and it can be described as intense and unrelenting.
On the average, though, upper back pain can be attributed to troubles which have to do with the muscles or joints. More often than not, the difficulty can be addressed without much difficulty.
The upper back is different in structure and purpose compared to the neck and the lower back. The former regions are there to help us move about. The upper back helps us to stand upright. It also protects the internal organs found inside the chest cavity. Thus, nature has made it sturdy and well-built. It is also so stable that it moves about with only restricted motion.
